Product Review: FitJoy Protein Bars

It’s that time of again: the beginning of January when the gyms are full of all of the boys and girls embarking on their new lives. We have the new gym bags and workout gear from Santa so all we need now is some post-workout snacks from FitJoy Nutrition to replenish our aching bodies and give us those gainz.

  • Delicious, health-focused ingredients
  • Numerous flavors
  • Great size and composition for after training
  • Affordable
Over the past month or so, I’ve been sampling the FitJoy line of protein bars (which I was sent from the company for review) and though I’m historically more of a protein powder and dextrose type, I quickly fell in love with these bars. I definitely look more forward to eating a FitJoy Birthday Cake Batter bar than downing a shaker full of powder in water. The best thing about FitJoy, is that all of their bars are made without artificial sweetners and they are gluten and GMO free! The company’s “About” section explains:

FitJoy began as a passion project by the company’s CEO, who, after being diagnosed with Celiac and a severe sensitivity to artificial sweeteners, wanted to develop a brand of on-the-go snacks that offered a gourmet taste experience that would excite his inner foodie without interfering with his health.”

As I ate each bar, I made note of my impressions regarding the taste and texture, and when I remembered, I took a photo. I’ve rated my favorites below. Try them all yourself and see what you think!

Birthday Cake Batter – Rating 5/5This is my very favorite FitJoy bar. It really does taste like a vanilla birthday cake but only with a slightly more chewy, brownie-like texture. The bar is coated with a vanilla, candy speckled frosting that melts in your mouth as soon as it makes contact with your saliva, similar to icing sugar melting. I feel as though I could probably eat 5 of these in one day, they are that delicious.

Homemade Pumpkin Pie – Rating 5/5If you’ve ever had pumpkin cheesecake or made the pumpkin pie bars in John Berardi’s Gourmet Nutrition, you will have an idea of what this bar tastes like. It is one of the most delicious protein bars I’ve ever had. It has perfect pumpkin flavor and it’s topped with that same, melt-in-your-mouth icing FitJoy uses on most of it’s bars. Definitely a treat to look forward to either a snack or after a hard training session.

220 cals, 7g fat, 25g carb, 20g protein

Chocolate Iced Brownie – Rating: 4.5/5Very nice, rich chocolate taste, a soft, chewy brownie texture with a layer of chocolate, chopped pecans and chocolate drizzled on top. It really does taste like your mom’s brownies, or the ones you wish she made for you.

230 cals, 8g fat, 25g carb, 20g protein

French Vanilla Almond – Rating 4.5/5Vanilla nut protein bars are generally among my top pics and FitJoy’s did not disappoint. The texture and flavor was on or above par with their toughest competitors, yet what I like about FitJoy is I can eat a whole bar at once instead of cutting it in half.

Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough – Rating 3.5/5This bar has a creamier texture than the other bars, yet still chewy. The chocolate chip taste is a bit strong and not quite believeable. I think I was expecting it to be closer to what a real chocolate chip tastes like but it’s closer to a cocoa taste than milk chocolate. I thought this bar was OK but maybe a little sweet overall. I did have a pretty bad headache when I ate this bar so food was generally grossing me out, especially sweet food. So try it for yourself, it may be your 5/5.

220 cals, 7g fat, 25g carb, 20g protein

Chocolate Peanut Butter – Rating 4.5/5A rich, chocolate taste. The texture is not too chewy, firm but a little more creamy than you would expect. I find most of these peanut butter protein bars are dry and difficult to eat. Contained real peanuts but they were moist, not hard. Overall, quite delicious and felt like a treat.

220 cals, 7g fat, 24g carb, 20g protein

Mint Chocolate Crisp – Rating 3.5/5

This bar tastes like the Winter Peppermint Bark but not quite as strong, mint-wise. It’s closer to a Thin Mint or mint Girl Guide cookie. It has a mild peppermint flavor and a chewy cake texture but the two go well together, unlike the Winter Peppermint Bark. There were crisps in this bar but I didn’t notice them very much when chewing at all. This bar is OK but not my favorite.

220 cals, 7g fat, 25g carb, 20g protein

Nice, even chewy texture. No grit or powder. I am a connoiseur of cinnamon rolls and this bar does actually have the flavor of a good roll. There are bits of pecans on top and what kind of looks like caramel and frosting, which has the sensation of frosting melting in your mouth when it hits the saliva. You don’t really notice the pecan bits as you’re chewing but that subtle flavor enhances the overall experience of eating this bar.

230 cals, 8g fat, 23g carb, 20g protein

This bar tastes like a thin mint or a candy cane. It has a very strong peppermint flavor however the texture is like a chewy cake. At least the texture isn’t gritty, it’s just a dense, nicely chewy bar however I don’t find the taste matches the texture and it threw me off a bit. I don’t really like this bar.

Where to Buy

You can order FitJoy bars on for $27.99USD per box, or if you’re local to Halifax, Nova Scotia, I was able to find them at Popeye’s for $3.69CAD each. Boxes of 12 were also available for you to mix and match and save. They didn’t have all of the flavors I received for review but they do have the Birthday Cake Batter, Chocolate Iced Brownie, Vanilla Almond and a couple more so run on down and get some before they’re all gone!

Happy New Year!
